Undercurrents @TheLivingPavilion

  • Main Stage @ The Living Pavilion Gate 8, University of Melbourne Melbourne, VIC 3052 (map)

Come along to the courtyard off Grattan St at the University of Melbourne at 2.30 on May 13, perhaps eat a late lunch on the grass, and enjoy a range of evocative and atmospheric contemporary music featuring brass and percussion. While you are at it you can check out the amazing space being created for the next couple of weeks as part of @TheLivingPavilion at the University of Melbourne.

Undercurrents is a classical music performance that explores the tension between the built environment and the natural movements of water and nature. The title piece Undercurrents by Thea Rossen is a mass work for Melbourne Conservatorium staff and students created for the Living Pavilion festival featuring the Federation Bells on loan from Museum Victoria. It is inspired by the story of Bouverie Creek, the built environment which now obscures it, and the eels that continue to use this hidden waterway as a migratory route through the campus. The concert further explores these themes through contemporary works by Australian and American composers performed by staff, students and guests of Melbourne Conservation of Music. Performers featured include Carla Blackwood, Joel Brennan, Don Immel, Peter Neville, Thomas D’Ath and special guests Thea Rossen, Jesse Deane and Zela Papageorgiou.

The concert is curated by Carla Blackwood and Thea Rossen
